Are Red Cross and Heart & Stroke Certificates Accepted by Alberta Employers?

Are Red Cross and Heart & Stroke certificates accepted by Alberta employers? The answer depends on the exact course, the role and the employer's requirements, not just the name on the certificate.

Alberta's approved first aid training agencies list, dated October 19, 2026 and covering October 19 to December 31, 2026, includes the Canadian Red Cross Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, with specific approved courses. That does not mean every certificate either organization issues meets every workplace or hiring requirement.

What Alberta requires for workplace first aid

Alberta's official first aid training guidance explains that Part 11 of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code places responsibility on the prime contractor, or employer when there is no prime contractor, to ensure workplace first aiders are appropriately trained.

Alberta does publish a list of approved training agencies and their approved courses. Employers and workers should verify approval before registering. Checking course content alone is not a substitute for checking approval or an applicable recognition allowance.

A local training provider may deliver courses on an approved agency's behalf without appearing separately on the list. Alberta recommends identifying the partner agency and confirming authorization with that agency, or obtaining its signed government approval letter.

Red Cross and Heart & Stroke: check the exact course

The October 19, 2026 list includes Red Cross Basic and Intermediate First Aid courses with CPR/AED, including specified blended courses. It also includes Heart & Stroke Standard First Aid courses at the Intermediate approval level and Emergency First Aid courses at the Basic approval level, with the specific options shown in the list.

Match the exact course, level and delivery format to the current approval listing and the requirement you need to meet. An agency's approval for particular first aid courses is not blanket approval of every CPR or BLS certificate it offers.

Legal requirements and employer requirements are different checks

For a designated workplace first aider, the applicable OHS requirements must be met. An employer's preference cannot replace those requirements.

Separately, a job, placement or professional role may have its own certificate requirements. Before booking, ask the employer, placement coordinator or relevant regulatory body for the exact course name, issuing organization, CPR or BLS level, accepted delivery format and renewal requirements. This guide does not establish any particular employer's acceptance policy or guarantee acceptance of your certificate.

Does BLS satisfy a workplace first aid requirement?

Do not assume that a BLS certificate meets a requirement for Basic or Intermediate workplace first aid, or that a workplace first aid certificate meets a role's BLS requirement. Confirm the exact credential requested. Alberta's approved first aid list identifies specific courses and approval levels; provider name alone is not enough.

If you have been asked for BLS, review our BLS Provider Course (blended) or BLS Renewal Course (blended). Check the course details and renewal eligibility before registering, and confirm that the selected course matches your employer's requirements.

Coming to Alberta with a certificate from another province?

Alberta has a specific Director's allowance for out-of-province workplace first aid training. It recognizes workplace first aid training recognized by another Canadian province or territory that complies with CSA Standard Z1210-17. Alberta's official summary states that qualifying certificates are considered proof of approved training until their expiry date.

The allowance took effect May 30, 2024 for five years, unless varied, suspended or revoked. Worksite parties may follow the original training requirements or the allowance; all other applicable OHS requirements continue to apply. Check the current order and its conditions rather than assuming every out-of-province certificate qualifies.

This Alberta allowance does not determine whether another province accepts an Alberta-issued certificate. If you are leaving Alberta, check the destination province or territory's workplace first aid rules and your receiving employer's requirements. A national provider name alone is not a guarantee of acceptance in every jurisdiction.

When does a certificate expire?

Alberta's first aid training guidance states that workplace first aid certifications are valid for up to three years. Workers may recertify before expiry; after expiry, a full course is required. Check your certificate's expiry date. Do not apply this workplace first aid timeframe automatically to a separate BLS credential or assume a universal annual CPR renewal rule applies to every role.

Choose the course that matches your requirement

For workplace first aid options, review our Basic / Emergency First Aid with CPR/AED C Course (blended) and Intermediate / Standard First Aid with CPR/AED C Course (blended). For a BLS requirement, review the BLS Provider and BLS Renewal course pages.

Before paying, confirm the required credential with your employer and check the applicable official approval or recognition conditions. This helps avoid booking a valid course that is not the course your role requires.
