BLS vs CPR: What's the Difference?

Alberta BLS certification CPR first aid healthcare

If you're researching first aid training, you've probably seen both "CPR" and "BLS" listed as course options. They sound similar — and they overlap — but they're not the same thing. Here's a clear breakdown to help you choose the right certification.

What Is CPR?

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is a life-saving technique used when someone's heart has stopped or they've stopped breathing. It combines chest compressions with rescue breaths to keep oxygenated blood circulating until emergency services arrive.

In Canada, CPR certifications are tiered by level:

  • CPR Level A — adult rescue breathing only
  • CPR Level B — adults and infants
  • CPR Level C — adults, children, and infants (the most common workplace requirement)
  • CPR Level HCP — for healthcare providers, includes two-rescuer CPR and bag-valve mask use

CPR courses are typically offered as a standalone certification or bundled with a First Aid course. A Red Cross CPR Level C certificate is valid for 1 year.

What Is BLS?

BLS (Basic Life Support) is a higher-level CPR certification designed specifically for healthcare professionals — nurses, paramedics, physicians, dental hygienists, and other clinical staff. It is offered through the Heart & Stroke Foundation and is recognized across Canadian healthcare settings.

BLS covers:

  • High-quality chest compressions and rescue breathing
  • Two-rescuer CPR techniques
  • Bag-valve mask (BVM) ventilation
  • AED use in a clinical context
  • Team-based resuscitation scenarios

A Heart & Stroke BLS Provider certificate is valid for 1 year and must be renewed annually.

Which One Do You Need?

  • If you work in a non-clinical workplace (office, construction, school, retail), a CPR Level C course is what you need.
  • If you are a healthcare professional and your employer or licensing body requires BLS, you need the BLS Provider course.
  • If you're unsure, check with your employer or regulatory college — they will specify which certification is accepted.
